Flaperons

The kit came and I was sailing it was the last weekend for a race on the peconic and it was my first race of the season so sailing it was. I received the kit on a friday and didn't unpack it till the following week. I was excited to get back into the project. Daily, I keep pondering how to finagle the funds to keep the project going. When I ordered the Flaps kit it was a few weeks after "SEPTEMBER 11th" everyone was still in shock and dismay, in addition the economy looked bleak. After much consternation I decided to continue!

GETTING TO WORK!

First let me say that the rudder and elevator was built on my front porch, but we moved the shop to the Florida room of the Cottage I have on my property. This gave me more room and the opportunity to setup a more dedicated work area.

Building the Flaperons

FIRST TIP Read and get the BIG Picture. There is alot they don't tell you in words and you must interpret from the Photos. Started work on10/20/2001 - made my measurments for centerlines, finished section 1 installing the flaperon nose rib and attachment brackets on 10/25/01 5:15pm

approximately 8 hours work.

Here I used a dremel to cut out an 'L' shape for the flap hinge bracket

Leading Edge Skin and splice plates assembly

start 10/25/01

finished bottoms on 10/27/01

completed 10/29/01

Zenith said not to attach the flap sections until you mount them on the wing this will give you a better perspective to create the offset of 20mm so i will leave this assemply step till later.

I attached the end ribs inside of the assembly zenith says it does not matter i had to make a cutout in the upper rib to allow it to go inside around the flap front member. There was already a cutout for the bottom. This seemed to me to be a cleaner installation

Completed end rib installation on 11/02/01
